Letter from the Secretary-General
Dear Delegates and Faculty Advisors,
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the first-ever session of Harvard Model United Nations Dubai! My name is Safa Salem and I have the distinct honor of serving as the Secretary-General of HMUN’s first conference in the Middle East. Our team could not be more excited to host this first iteration from June 5th-8th in the grand city of Dubai.
For decades, Harvard Model United Nations has prided itself on bringing together future leaders from all over the world for intense debate, spirited camaraderie, and intercultural exchange. By expanding to the Middle East, HMUN will continue its emphasis on extending its educational mission beyond the confines of national borders. HMUN Dubai will push the boundaries of a Model United Nations Conference. It will allow delegates to interact with broader global communities through a memorable and pedagogical experience. Through a weekend of conference, delegates will not only walk away with public speaking, writing, and negotiating skills, but with an invested belief that they, too, can shape the future of their own communities.
I, along with the rest of our highly talented Harvard team and host team, will be tirelessly working over the next year to ensure that the first rendition of HMUN Dubai is as substantively excellent and socially memorable as possible. We believe that learning happens both inside and outside of the committee room. To this end, we have dedicated ourselves entirely to bringing conference innovations that will allow delegates to both form cross-cultural friendships with each other at our social events, and engage with top diplomatic leaders through conference-wide programming.
Our team is wholeheartedly devoted to creating a conference that inspires a generation of youth to think critically about how they can get involved with improving the status of our international community. We hope to ignite in these bright-minded students a flame that drives them to believe they are truly capable of achieving anything and everything. At HMUN Dubai, any dream can become possible.
On behalf of the Harvard staff, I cordially invite you all to join us for HMUN Dubai 2020!
Safa S. Salem
HMUN Dubai 2020
Harvard Model United Nations (HMUN) is the product of a long history of excellence and service. The conference is one of the oldest in the world, having been introduced more than 70 years ago; along with its fellow initiatives within The Harvard International Relations Council, HMUN has repeatedly been the one to break new ground, set global trends and achieve the highest levels of quality within International Relations-based education. Today, HMUN engages over 6000 students each year across its three conferences in the United States, China and India.
Our conferences are academic simulations of the United Nations that hosts students from across the world, inviting them to come together and respond to the most pressing global issues of the time. True to the spirit of the United Nations, HMUN strives to foster a constructive forum for open dialogue on a range of complex issues, including international peace and security and economic and social progress.
We ask delegates to think critically about the world around them, and to think in new and ambitious ways. What is the purpose of multilateral organizations like the United Nations? What can they achieve? How do we balance national interests with the interests of the international community? How do we ensure that those with power use it responsibly? What can young people do to affect change in their own communities and the world at large?
